Carbon Steel Flanges and Its Types

Flanges are simple mechanical connectors that are used for high-pressure piping applications. Pipe flanges are collars used to make a connection between two pipes. Flanges bear a good moment–carrying capacity as compared to other mechanical connectors. Flanges are preferred as they are well understood, more reliable and are readily available from a wide range of suppliers. Flanges are designed to withstand high temperatures and have excellent corrosion resistance.

There are various material grades used to form these flanges. The most popular material grade is carbon steel. Regular Carbon Flanges are commonly used in modern pipe systems & infrastructure. Carbon Steel Flanges can be divided based on designs. Following are the various kinds of Carbon Steel Flanges.

Slip on Flanges
Slip-on Flanges are solid and circular in shape. This type of flange is in huge demand in the domestic markets. As the name hints these flanges are slippery. They slide over at the end of the pipe and are then welded. This type of flange is ideal for low pressure applications and easy to install.

Socket Weld Flanges
The fabrication of Socket Weld Flange is similar to that of slip-on flange but it provides a smooth bore and better fluid flow. This flange ensures disconnection and reconnection of a pipe with great ease. If carbon steel is used in its fabrication, it becomes more durable and performs well. These flanges are ideal for small-sized, high pressure piping.

Blind Flanges
Blind Flanges are used to close the end of a pipe and are manufactured using high quality of carbon steel. These flanges can be customized on different parameters. There is no center hold to close the pipe ends and are round plates. Blind Flanges have a distinctive feature that it fits to all standard pipes in all sizes at high pressure as compared to all other flange types.

Lap Joint Flanges
These flanges are used on piping fitted with lap joint stub ends. Easy alignment and assembly of bolt holes is allowed as they can rotate around the pipe even after the welds are completed. This type is preferred when frequent disassembling of pipes and flange is needed. The pressure ratings are low but are higher than slip-on flanges.

Threaded Flanges
The main benefit of Threaded Flange is that these can be attached to the pipe without welding. Threaded Flanges are tapered to create a seal between pipe and flange. The flanges are threaded in bore to match the external threading on a pipe. Threaded Flanges are mostly used for small pipes and low pressures. They are completely avoided when it comes to large loads.

Weld Neck Flanges
Widely opted for high pressure applications, Weld Neck Flanges are formed in a circular section of steel plate having a small co-axial hole in the center. They have a long tapered hub. The tapered hub provides strength reinforcement by transferring stress from the flange to the pipe itself.

Pipe flanges are made from number of various material grades but Carbon Steel is mostly preferred over other material grades because of its high hardness and strength. Some of the other common material grades include alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper, and PVC.
